Job Description

The Clinical Services Nurse Specialist at the American National Red Cross plays a key role in advancing safe, high-quality clinical care across blood services and health-related programs. Working within the Healthcare & Medical Services department, this nurse specialist provides clinical expertise, guidance, and support to teams responsible for blood collection, processing, and related clinical initiatives. Drawing on strong clinical judgment and evidence-based practice, the Clinical Services Nurse Specialist helps develop, implement, and evaluate clinical protocols, policies, and best practices that uphold regulatory standards and promote patient and donor safety. In this role, the nurse specialist collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, technical staff, and program leaders to review clinical practices, monitor outcomes, and identify opportunities for improvement. The position supports education and training for clinical and field staff, designing and delivering competency-based learning on topics such as phlebotomy safety, transfusion-related practices, infection prevention, and emergency response. The Clinical Services Nurse Specialist participates in incident reviews and root-cause analyses, offering clinical insight and recommendations that strengthen quality, safety, and consistency across Red Cross clinical services. The nurse specialist also contributes to disaster response and emergency preparedness activities, bringing nursing expertise to planning, drills, and real-time operations. This includes advising on health and safety protocols in shelters and community settings, supporting clinical assessments, and ensuring that Red Cross humanitarian standards and public health guidelines are integrated into operations. The role requires strong communication and documentation skills to clearly convey clinical guidance, interpret regulatory and accreditation requirements, and translate complex medical information into practical tools and educational materials for staff and volunteers.
