UF Health in Gainesville is seeking a dedicated ECMO Specialist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team on a full-time basis, working three 12-hour shifts per week. As an integral member of a multidisciplinary critical care team in a leading academic medical center, you will provide expert bedside support for patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for severe cardiac and/or respiratory failure. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe initiation, operation, monitoring, and weaning of ECMO circuits, collaborating closely with intensivists, cardiothoracic surgeons, perfusionists, nurses, and respiratory therapists to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. The ECMO Specialist will continuously assess and optimize ECMO support by monitoring hemodynamics, gas exchange, anticoagulation, and circuit performance, promptly identifying and troubleshooting alarms, complications, and equipment malfunctions. You will manage and document ventilator and ECMO settings, interpret blood gases and laboratory data, and support adjustments in therapy based on evolving patient conditions and evidence-based protocols. A strong foundation in critical care, cardiopulmonary physiology, mechanical ventilation, and invasive monitoring is essential, as is adherence to infection prevention and safety standards in a high-acuity environment. Working within UF Health’s collaborative and inclusive culture, the ECMO Specialist will actively participate in daily rounds, communicate clearly with the care team, and contribute to individualized care plans that respect patient and family needs. You will provide education and support to patients’ families about ECMO therapy, help prepare patients for potential transitions off ECMO or to advanced therapies, and participate in emergency responses, including rapid circuit assessments during clinical deterioration or code situations. The position requires meticulous documentation in the electronic medical record, compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines, and engagement in quality-improvement initiatives to enhance ECMO outcomes and patient safety.
