Position Summary The Cancer Center Social Worker is responsible for providing psychosocial and clinical support services to Cancer Center patients and their families primarily in the outpatient setting. The Social Worker assesses patients from a culturally and ethnically diverse population and provides outpatient clinical intervention while establishing plans for effective management of identified needs. The Social Worker acts as an advocate for patients and provides supportive, short-term counseling, crisis intervention and care management to individuals and/or their families impacted by cancer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
- Conducts initial and ongoing comprehensive psychosocial assessments in order address the clinical needs of Cancer Center patients and their family members.
- Provide individual, couple, and family therapy. Clinical services include individual, couple, and family therapies with psychiatric outpatient assessments.
- Development of a care plan with patient and family based on mutually agreed upon goals to enhance, maintain and promote optimal psychosocial functioning throughout cancer treatment and its outcome.
- Collaboration with other professional disciplines in the planning and provision of timely and efficient clinical services to cancer patients and their families.
- Refer patients and/or family members to community resources to assist in recovery from mental or physical illness and to provide access to services such as financial assistance, legal aid, housing, job placement or education.
- Develops, implements and facilitates various psycho-educational support groups and programs for Cancer Center patients and/or their families.
- Participates actively in the Survivorship Clinic by informing patients of the clinic, providing short-term therapy to clinic patients when needed, and performing IRB-approved research.
- Provides supervision and educational activities of graduate level 2nd year social work and art therapy student interns and volunteers as needed
- Maintain comprehensive, timely and accurate documentation of patient assessments and interventions in the electronic health record.
- Collaboration with other disciplines and staff in the areas of psychosocial clinical services, patient-and family-centered care, research and education.
- Advocate for quality patient care and optimal patient care systems to advance health equity, improve quality, and reduce health disparities.
Minimum Qualifications: Education - Master’s Degree in Social Work. OSW-C preferred or obtained within 2 years of hire.
Licensure - Current active social work license in the District of Columbia (LMSW or LCSW).
Experience - Minimum of 1 year of medical social work experience within a cancer care or specialty outpatient setting.
Physical Requirements - Walk, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulder frequently in an office setting.
- Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and frequently push or pull up to 20 lbs. as part of the role
- Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
- Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
